Where the Hills Meet the Coastal Plain

Spray Foam Insulation in Wetumpka deals with some of the most varied ground in the River Region. The city straddles the Coosa River about five miles above its meeting with the Tallapoosa, and it sits right on the Fall Line, where the Appalachian foothills meet the Gulf Coastal Plain. Just east of downtown lie the hills of the Wetumpka impact crater, about five miles wide, which Auburn University researchers confirmed as a meteorite crater in 2002. Houses here range from river-town homes near the old downtown to newer places on wooded lots in the hills.

Older houses near the river

Wetumpka was incorporated in 1834, and the Tuskeena Street District is on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Older homes near the river often sit on piers or block foundations, with crawl spaces that collect moisture in a humid summer. The city also knows floods: Wikipedia calls the 1886 flood the worst in its history. For low-lying houses, we look hard at drainage and standing water before recommending any crawl space work, because encapsulating over water only traps it.

Houses rebuilt after 2019

On January 19, 2019, a tornado destroyed First Presbyterian Church and badly damaged First Baptist Church across the Bibb Graves Bridge from downtown. Houses in its path were repaired or rebuilt, and remodels are a good time to foam open walls before drywall goes back up.

Newer homes in the hills

Homes built on slopes often have a crawl space on the low side and a slab or short foundation on the high side. The low end tends to run damp. Many also have bonus rooms and long attic runs of ductwork. Sealing the attic and handling the crawl space usually go together on these houses.

Two counties of building styles

Wetumpka's mix of old downtown streets and newer homes in the surrounding hills means no single approach fits. An older home near the river may need its crawl space and wall cavities sealed from below, while a house up on a wooded lot may need little underneath but a lot in the attic and bonus room. Trees shade some roofs and keep attics cooler, while open lots take full sun. We look at the actual exposure, the foundation type and where the ductwork runs before suggesting anything, and the written quote explains why each area got the material it did.

Wetumpka Questions

My Wetumpka house is near the river. Is encapsulation a good idea?

It can be, but only after drainage is sorted out. We check for standing water, how the ground slopes toward the house and how the gutters drain. If water gets in, that has to be fixed first.

Can you foam the walls while we are rebuilding?

Yes. Open studs during a remodel or repair are the easiest time to spray foam. Let us know your drywall schedule and we will plan around it.

Why is one end of my crawl space wetter than the other?

On a sloped lot, the low side collects runoff and stays damp longer. We note that during the inspection and plan the barrier and insulation accordingly.

Is the old downtown area harder to insulate?

Older houses take more care because of plaster, trim and tight crawl spaces, but most of the work happens from the attic and below. We plan around the finishes.
